ICD-10-CM/PCS Implementation

Currently the codfication system in Portugal to code diagnoses and procedures is the ICD-9-CM ((International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision Clinical Modification).

Although, its extinction is expected to happen soon, being replaced by the ICD-10-CM/PCS (International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision, Clinical Modification).

The ICD10-CM/PCS is a significant improvement of the previous edition, due to its superior clinical specificity, allowing the inclusion of more detail in the data codification process.

The adoption of ICD-10-CM/PS should begin on the 1st of January 2017, according to the Order nº 9090/2015 - 3 de agosto de 2015 of the Portuguese Government.

The Portuguese Ministry of Health Shared Services will assure the adaptation of its Information Systems to this new classification system.

The reasons to change the clinical codification systems are:

  • ICD-9-CM limitations to portray proprely the diversity of existing diagnoses and procedures;
  • The international recognition that the ICD-10-CM/PCS represents a much more comprehensive classification to properly portary the innovation, description and classification of different diseases.
